Pelham bits are designed to be used with two reins, the 'snaffle' rein on the larger ring which should have a constant contact, and the curb rein is attached to the smaller loose bottom ring and is used when needed.
The small hole in the shank just above the curb ring is for a lip strap, not essential but correct for showing and helps to keep the curb chain flat.
If the rider wishes to use only one pair of reins, roundings can be used to join the snaffle and curb rings together and the reins go on the loop of leather to give an action on both mouthpiece and curb when the rein is pulled.
French link mouthpiece relives the nutcracker action and prevents palate pressure.
The french link removes the nutcracker action of a single joint and therefore may be a good choice for horses with a low palate. Instead, the mouthpiece lays flat across the tongue.
There is a lot more mobility within the french link mouthpiece, some horses that may get 'set' in a single jointed or mullen mouthed bit, may go lighter and lean less.
Horses with large or sensitive tongues may oppose to the french link because of the closer contact over the tongue.
The Single Jointed mouthpiece exerts pressure on the bars and roof of the mouth.
Available in Stainless Steel with either a French Link or Single Jointed Mouthpiece in 4.5', 5', 5.5' or 6'.
Please note that bits which have had the tags removed or have been in contact with the horses mouth cannot be returned for health & safety reasons.
